Tsunami Relief

A 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Indonesia, on December 26, 2004. How can we respond?

Dear Friends in Catholic Youth Ministry:

There are some touchstone moments for each generation. . . Where were you when Kennedy was shot? . . . Where were you when the Challenger exploded? . . . Where were you on 9/11? Might the question for today’s generation of young people from their peers throughout our world be . . . Where were you during the Indian Ocean Tsunami?

We look towards the Indian Ocean and see the devastation that has claimed over 150,000 souls and displaced and discomforted countless others. As U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan toured the Aceh province, he stated, “You wonder, where are the people? What has happened to them?”

These web pages outline two possibilities for young people to express their solidarity with the tsunami victims; through Catholic Relief Services and Souper Bowl of Caring. Both have been partners in ministry with the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry and I confidently encourage you to support them.

The following links also have further resources for prayer and Catholic news available to you as well.

Please join the members of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry in our prayers for the dead, lost, and suffering throughout our world this day.

Sincerely,
Robert J. McCarty, D.Min.
Executive Director
National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry
