Breakout Session I
Listening in Diverse Contexts: How Listening in the Peripheries Changes How We Do Ministry
Piedmont Room
Piedmont Room
Many pastoral frameworks and plans have come from processes of listening, including Listen, Teach, Send. Previous processes like the National Dialogue, the V Encuentro, and Journeying Together helped give insights to how to listen to diverse perspectives and center the voices of those at the peripheries. In looking at these previous processes and their impact on this framework, this panel will share how you can use listening as an important pastoral tool to include all members of your community, especially those who are at the peripheries. These tools can be used to help you serve culturally and intergenerationally diverse communities.

Asking Better Questions and Processing
Buckhead Room
Buckhead Room
Blank stares can be one of the most painful experiences a ministry leader can have. Certainly young people can be a tough crowd, but sometimes it simply comes down to the kinds of questions we are asking. This session will equip youth leaders and people who form youth leaders to be more strategic in how they form and ask questions. It will also tackle the problem of making faith relevant through a conversation on processing.

They Said—We Said: Insights from Qualitative Studies of Pastors & Ministry Leaders
Lenox Room
Lenox Room
This workshop delves into the findings of two important qualitative studies—one focused on ministry leaders responsible for guiding young people from early adolescence through young adulthood, and the other capturing the perspectives of pastors both using a similar set of questions. Through a comparative analysis, we will explore where pastors and ministry leaders align and where they differ on key issues affecting ministry today. Join us as we uncover the converging visions and diverging viewpoints that shape the future of Catholic ministries to youth and young adults.

Join Sr. Judy Gomila, MSC, and Carmen Hershey, a senior at Loyola University New Orleans, as they delve into the transformative power of sharing and hearing stories across generational lines. Our two presenters met when Carmen’s oral history class was tasked with interviewing religious sisters for the Loyola Institute for Ministry’s Flourishing Sisterhood podcast. This interaction not only enriched their individual understanding of each other but also illuminated the broader significance of story-telling within the Church.

The research has shown that there are three areas that lead to lifelong discipleship. These areas are cultivated in the middle school and high school years and will reap a harvest in eternity. Because of that, these areas should be considered the top priorities in our work. The workshop will reveal the three areas that can bring clear focus to the work of youth ministry and will provide practical strategies for advancing these areas in local parishes.

Sport as Ministry--Leading Youth to Christ Through Sport
Buckhead Room
Buckhead Room
In 2020, the NCEA published: Play Like a Champion: Following the Vatican’s Lead to Elevate the Culture of American Sport which describes a “Pastoral Action Plan” to align with the Vatican’s vision of sport as a tool for evangelization, encounter and formation outlined in the Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, Family & Life “Giving the Best of Yourself.” The session will acknowledge challenges in the current sport environment and reveal numerous intentional ways to realize sport as ministry. Catholic schools and parishes sponsor sports, but too often the goal of athletics can seem adrift from the mission of our church. What would happen if our school and diocesan sports programs adopted a virtue-driven approach to development? Following in the footsteps of St. Thomas Aquinas, St. John Paul II and Pope Francis, this session will demonstrate how the cardinal virtues offer the ideal framework for elevating the culture of sports, offering specific ideas and tools to assure that athletic programs align with the mission of Catholic church.

Happy, Healthy, Holy: Making Sure We're Ministering to Ourselves
Roswell Room
Roswell Room
How do we continue to evangelize others but still take care of ourselves?
How do we bear fruit for the kingdom, while continuing to grow toward real human integration and inner harmony? St. Paul captures the dilemma so well: “I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.” (Rom. 7:15) We must never lose the intentional focus on the interior life; it’s been called the “soul of the apostolate” or the “interior reservoir.” Paying attention to the spiritual life is paramount, but we also must pay attention to the area of human formation – personal integration within. Many today are having experiences of “disintegration.” In this session, we will explore these unique challenges that many people in ministry are facing and will outline very practical pathways to health. The remedies can only be found in Christ, but they do require our work and participation, what we could call the real work of “human integration”.

NFCYM will host Momentum 9: Life After High School on Thursday, May 8. This digital conference will focus on the role ministry leaders play in accompanying young people through the transitions that come after high school—whether they’re heading to college, entering the workforce or military, pursuing vocational training, or embarking on a path of religious vocation.
In this interactive breakout session facilitated by Cooper Ray and Chris Leach, you’ll collaborate with fellow ministry leaders to brainstorm and outline the key themes and content that will be highlighted at Momentum 9. Your voice will directly influence the development of the conference, ensuring we equip high school graduates with the faith-filled support they need for a successful transition into their next chapter.
This workshop and Momentum 9 are presented in partnership between NFCYM and Newman Ministries.

Heartfelt Presence: Building Emotional Intelligence and Accompaniment in Ministry
Peachtree Room
Peachtree Room
This session will focus on cultivating a “heartfelt presence” in ministry, where emotional intelligence and accompaniment create meaningful connections. By developing emotional awareness and empathy, leaders can be fully present to the needs and struggles of those they serve, listening with both their hearts and minds. Participants will explore how intentional presence allows ministry leaders to accompany others on their journey with Jesus, leading to deeper faith, unwavering trust, and authentic transformation. The session will offer practical tools for integrating emotional intelligence into ministry, helping participants become emotionally intelligent leaders and compassionate companions to young people and their communities.

Youth Protagonism in Action
Piedmont Room
Piedmont Room
This session will explore the topic youth protagonism through the lens of the Youth Co-Leadership and Protagonism Initiative (YCOPI) of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Launched in 2023, YCOPI is a new project that engages parish youth and accompanying adults in a robust two-year pilot to deepen faith through a series of events and a combination of spiritual formation, catechesis, and training. The goal of YCOPI is to train intergenerational cohorts of Missionary Disciples to conceptualize, design, and lead Youth Mission Initiatives (YMIs) in their respective communities. These youth are charged with engaging peers, adults, and others in their mission-driven project setting a new ministry standard for others across the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. YCOPI is a collaborative effort between the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Goodfaith, a membership organization of NFCYM. The project resulted from the desire of the Archdiocese to innovate a new paradigm for ministry with youth and Goodfaith’s vision to apply its research (“Accompanying Youth: Mapping the Path Toward Deeper Discipleship”) in diverse settings. Marisally Santiago, Director of the Office of Ministry with Youth, and Stephanie Peddicord, President of Goodfaith, have collaborated on YCOPI since its inception. This included not only the program design and implementation process, but also the funding application that made YCOPI possible – a fruitful exercise in professional accompaniment! This session will include preliminary results and observations from YCOPI, along with helpful tips for implementing something similar within other diverse contexts. Further, it will highlight the “how-tos” of effective collaboration between archdiocesan and organizational members.

Beyond the Buzzword: Authentic Accompaniment in Youth Ministry
Roswell Room
Roswell Room
In a world where technology connects us instantly, loneliness still remains a pervasive issue, especially among young people. Over 73% of Generation Z reports feeling isolated, despite their constant digital interactions. This talk addresses how the Church can play a critical role in overcoming this growing sense of loneliness by fostering authentic relationships through a ministry of accompaniment. Drawing from personal experience, Christopher Wesley shares stories of both success and missed opportunities in ministry, illustrating the importance of being truly present with those we serve. Wesley emphasizes that creating Christ-centered relationships, grounded in prayer and empathy, is the key to forming lasting connections and helping young people develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The talk challenges ministry leaders to move beyond traditional programs and into the “mission field” by spending time with young people in their environments, listening to their struggles, and walking alongside them in their journey. Wesley offers practical steps on how to create a culture of belonging within the Church by centering ministry on Christ, engaging deeply with the community, and practicing the art of listening. Through this presentation, attendees will gain new insights and tools for transforming their ministries into spaces where young people feel seen, heard, and loved—empowered to live out their faith with confidence.

Teach us to Accompany All Young People in Our Parish
Buckhead Room
Buckhead Room
The word “accompaniment” has been a buzzword in ministry for several years. Research shows us that while ministry leaders understand that we are called to one-on-one accompaniment and a relational model of ministry with young people, we still struggle to practically implement accompaniment in our parish youth ministries. In this session, Misty Mehrkens will share how their parishes are implementing the Accompaniment Project to change the culture of their parish toward an accompaniment model of ministry that empowers and equips adults in the community to accompany all young people.
