Those who work with young people know that sports and professional athletes have incredible influence over the lives of most teenagers. The NFL is one of the most dominant cultural institutions today, which means that it is consistently in the spotlight when our country experiences conflict. Racism. The Pandemic. Political division. These issues have impacted all of us this year, from the NFL to each of our parishes and dioceses, and they will continue to have a significant impact on the lives of our young people.
Grounded in his faith and starting with the core Catholic value of the dignity of every person, Chris Ballard offers his insights and experiences for how to work effectively and justly to achieve unity within a diverse organization. Join this moderated conversation between Chris, Indianapolis Chaplain Fr. Douglas Hunter, long-time youth minister Mike Patin plus Darius Villalobos, NFCYM’s Director of Cultural Diversity to learn practical tips for how our Catholic faith can help you engage in difficult conversations with young people about topics of supreme importance in our society.

Racism: Authentic Conversations Between Young People and Clergy
Racism is a difficult issue to talk about openly and honestly, yet that is exactly what ministry leaders must do to help transform attitudes and hearts. This webinar is facilitated by young people asking the clergy representing different cultural and ethnic communities on how the Church has participated in and has addressed racism in this country. They also discuss what systematic change must be done within and outside diocesan structures (staff, seminary, clergy, outside communities) to help our communities address the sin of racism in society and in our Church.

Racism is a sin. Like most sins, it’s not easy to name or talk about with others in a group setting. Many people choose to not say anything for fear of saying the wrong thing. Silence is not the solution. Silence contributes to the deep pain and suffering of people of color and it makes reconciliation further out of reach. How can we have honest, critical, and courageous conversations to move toward healing and restoring the dignity of all people? Join us to learn conversation techniques and receive resources to assist in facilitating these essential conversations with young people, colleagues, friends and family.
